It began as a typo. Isaac Schorr published an article titled Hypocrisy and Fear All the Way Down at Twitter on mediaite.com creating John Mastodon from whole cloth saying:
Before this latest wave of suspensions, Twitter had already suspended the account posting the location of Musk’s jet. Then, the platform removed John Mastodon, the founder of a competing social media company named after himself, for posting a link to the jet tracker’s Mastodon account.
We’re taking the piss out of this article and remembering all the fun we had back in 2022. It was so sloppy, so totally rushed out with no checking at all in the breathless days after Elon Musk acquired Twitter.
